Google’s $750M Bet: Why the “AI Agent Era” is the New Frontier for Partners

John McCabe  /  June 16, 2026

If you have been keeping a close eye on the tech world lately, you might have noticed a pretty big wave coming from Mountain View. Google Cloud just announced something that should make every partner sit up and take notice. They are putting a massive $750 million on the table to help their ecosystem jump into what they are calling the “AI Agent Era.”

This news, originally reported by Wade Tyler Millward for CRN, isn’t just about another fund or a new set of incentives. It marks a “material paradigm shift” in how companies work together. According to Kevin Ichhpurani, the president of Google Cloud’s global ecosystem, we are moving away from just digitizing old ways of doing things. We are entering a time where business processes are being completely reimagined through something called “agent-ification.”

If that sounds like a big word, don’t worry. It basically just means that instead of just using software to record data, we are building AI “agents” that can actually take action. And for those of us involved in building a channel partner strategy, this changes almost everything.

What is Agent-ification, anyway?

In the past, a lot of strategic channel programs were built around a simple idea: take a process that already exists and make it digital. Think of it like taking a paper form and putting it on a website. It’s faster, sure, but the process is still basically the same.

Google says those days are over. Agent-ification is about creating AI agents that don’t just sit there, they do the work. Imagine an agent that doesn’t just track an insurance claim but actually processes it, verifies the data, and moves it to the next stage without a human needing to click “save” every five minutes.

For partners, this means the “rate card” era is starting to fade. Customers don’t just want to pay for hours of technical skill yet; they want to pay for a specific outcome. They want to know if you can lower hospital readmission rates or boost marketing conversion. They are looking for results, and Google is giving partners the tools to deliver them.

A $750 Million Vote of Confidence

Google’s new fund is a massive signal that they see partners as the key to this future. In fact, about 80% of Google Cloud’s incremental revenue comes through partners. That is a huge number! It shows that even a giant like Google knows they can’t do this alone.

So, what exactly is in this $750 million fund? It is focused on a few key areas that are designed to help you succeed:

  • Large-scale training: They want to make sure you have the skills to build these agents.
  • Forward-Deployed Engineers (FDEs): Google is actually sending its own engineers to work side-by-side with partners in hands-on workshops. This is a great way to get expert help on your most complex projects.
  • Pre-sales investments: They are co-funding Minimum Viable Products (MVPs). This means you can show a customer a real business outcome using their own data before they have to commit to a massive contract.
  • Post-sales incentives: They are rewarding partners who get customers “live” and actually using the tools, rather than just signing a deal and walking away.

It looks like Google is trying to take the risk out of innovation for you. They want you to feel supported as you try new things.

Making the Partner Program “Agentic”

One of the most interesting parts of this news is that Google is also using AI to fix their own partner program. David Smith, Google’s channel chief, mentioned that they are looking into AI-generated statements of work (SOWs) and “90-day agentic transformation sprints.”

Instead of waiting a whole year to see what’s new, Google wants to move in 90-day cycles. This keeps everything fresh and allows you to adapt to the market faster. If you’ve ever felt like partner programs were a bit slow or stuck in the past, this might be the breath of fresh air you’ve been waiting for.

They are also leaning hard into their marketplaces. The Google Cloud Marketplace and the Gemini Agent Gallery are becoming the go-to spots for customers to find the agents you build. Just like there used to be “an app for that,” Google wants there to be “an agent for that.”

Why Your Channel Partner Strategy Needs an Update

If you haven’t started thinking about how AI agents fit into your business, that is okay. You haven’t missed the boat yet. But it is probably time to start looking at your channel partner strategy through a new lens.

The old way was all about technical specs and “how many people do you have certified?” The new way is about “what problem are you solving for the customer?” Google has already identified 120 different “job families” where agents can make a massive difference. This represents a $20 trillion opportunity. Yes, trillion with a “T.”

When we talk about partner ecosystem consulting, this is exactly the kind of shift we help businesses navigate. It’s not just about adding a new product to your list; it’s about changing how you talk to your customers and how you measure success.

The Importance of Strategic Channel Programs

Building strategic channel programs in this new era requires a different kind of focus. You aren’t just a reseller anymore; you are a solution provider in the truest sense of the word. You are taking a platform like Gemini Enterprise and turning it into a specific tool that solves a specific problem for a specific industry.

Maybe you specialize in healthcare, and you build an agent that helps doctors stay on top of patient records. Or maybe you’re in finance, and you create an agent that spots fraud before it even happens. The possibilities are huge, and the $750 million fund is there to help you get those ideas off the ground.

Google’s bet is that the companies who lean into this “agent-ification” now will be the leaders of the next decade. They are solving the two hardest things for any business: distribution and trust. By building on Google’s stack, you get access to their massive customer base and the trust they’ve built over decades.

A Hopeful Path Forward

It is easy to feel a bit overwhelmed by how fast things are moving. AI can feel like a lot to take in. But you don’t have to have it all figured out today. The most important thing is just to stay curious and open to the possibilities.

Google is making it very clear that they want their partners to succeed. They aren’t just giving you the software and saying “good luck.” They are putting their money: and their engineers: where their mouth is.

If you are looking to refine your channel partner strategy or if you feel like your current strategic channel programs aren’t quite ready for the AI era, it might be a good time to reach out for some partner ecosystem consulting. Sometimes just having an outside perspective can help you see the opportunities you might have missed.
